Forty-one of us gathered in Ann Arbor for the 2011 reunion.  We had 27 alumni and 14 current staff members for dinner and socializing.  They literally had to ask us to leave at the end of the evening...

On Saturday the usual gang put together a typical atypical Saturday Night Special: Sat_Nite_Special2011.pdf

Nice Story on Al Jaffee

aljaffee.jpgAlthough he's not in any way (that I know of) associated with Gargoyle he's nearly as old and certainly influential -- Al Jaffee is 91 and CNN has a nice piece on his impact.

More on the reunion to come shortly...

2011 Reunion

The 2011 reunion was a rousing success!  Thanks to all the alums who attended.  You guys are what make these things so much fun.

Although we didn't have the resources to actually print out the Saturday Night Special, it'll be available on this site soon as a PDF.  To get you riled up for it, here's the cover, drawn by yours truly:

For future reunions, I'd really like to encourage all alums, not just those attending the reunion, to write or draw things for the Saturday Night Special and send them in!  This year we had a few truly wonderful contributions from non-attendees, alongside the delightful creations of attending alumni and current staff.

A Virtual Liver (for Drinking Near Beer?)

Virtual Liver LobuleI'm on a team for a virtual liver project at EPA that got a nice write-up in the local news this month:

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK
Forget virtual reality - the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is building virtual human organs. The EPA's "virtual tissue" researchers are developing a set of computer simulations that may one day be able to identify the risks posed by common industrial pollutants such as pesticides without testing them on animals.  Dr. John Wambaugh, a physical scientist at the EPA [and Gargoyle EiC '98-99] says, "the liver is like the Secret Service agent that jumps in front of the bullet."

LORD OF THE WEASELS

On June 20th the final chapter in the "I'm In The Band" trilogy written by Shawn Thomas and Steve Jarczak (EiC 2000-2002) showed on the DisneyXD Channel

When Iron Weasel delves into the realm of Live Action Role Playing, an underlying quarrel over leadership of the band erupts into all-out feudal warfare!  (with foam swords)

Hopefully you have caught all of the Jarczak epiodes.  At least one of which featured Alan Thicke in a fez:

John Dobbertin passed along this New Yorker blog post about the King James Bible. Why the King James Bible, you ask? Because the tail end of the article mentions GargAlum Janet Malcolm, who edited our humble Gargoyle in the early 1950s:

And Dan Chiasson springboards from James 1:23 ("For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass") into a poem about how he interviewed (or didn't interview) Janet Malcolm, whose new book "Iphigenia in Forest Hills" originated as an article in the magazine:

She'd interviewed herself, I realized later;
I was bystander to a rendezvous.
I stared at my reflection in the mirror.
Janet Malcolm wrote the questions she had answered.

As mentioned in the article, Janet has a new book out, Iphigenia in Forest Hills.

'50s Garg editor David Kessel had this to add:

Janet was one of the more successful of the alumni (along with Arthur Miller and David Newman) and remains the only prominent one still alive. She turned out such a successful satire on the New Yorker that they promptly hired her (and her first husband Don Malcolm) when they finished up at the U of M.

Doris' Legacy

As you all know, the GargAlum community has been deeply saddened by the passing of Doris Ann Smith, the artist and wonderful woman who had been responsible for the covers of the Saturday Night Special for many years.

Today I received an email from GargAlum Archimandrite-For-Life John Dobbertin that plans are being made for some wonderful pieces of Doris' original art and other Gargoyle paraphernalia to be sent to the Bentley Archival Library, at the University of Michigan.

The Bentley is the current home of a near-complete historical archive of the Gargoyle, in addition to many other fine things which are not worth mentioning.

I've asked John to keep us in the loop on this process. Hopefully we'll be able to get some pictures of these treasures.
